FCL vs LCL Shipping: How to Choose the Right Option
FCL or LCL? Compare cost, transit time, risk and paperwork for full container and shared container ocean freight from India, plus the break-even point in CBM.

Choosing between FCL (Full Container Load) and LCL (Less than Container Load) is one of the first decisions in any ocean shipment. The right choice depends on volume, budget, timelines and how fragile your cargo is.
Quick comparison
| Factor | FCL | LCL |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing | Flat rate per container | Per CBM or tonne (W/M) |
| Transit time | Faster — no consolidation | +3–7 days for consolidation |
| Handling | Sealed at origin, opened at destination | Handled at CFS at both ends |
| Damage risk | Lower | Slightly higher |
| Best for | 13+ CBM, heavy or high-value cargo | 1–13 CBM shipments |
The break-even point
LCL is priced per revenue ton — 1 CBM or 1,000 kg, whichever is greater. Once your shipment reaches roughly 13–15 CBM, a 20′ container often costs the same or less than LCL, with faster transit and less handling.
Use our CBM calculator to measure your cargo before you decide.
When LCL makes sense
- You ship small volumes regularly
- You are testing a new market
- You want to hold less inventory at destination
When FCL makes sense
- Volume exceeds ~13 CBM
- Cargo is fragile, high-value or heavy
- You need the fastest possible sea transit
Consider consolidation
If you buy from several Indian suppliers, cargo consolidation lets you combine them into a single FCL — getting FCL economics with LCL-sized orders.
